Wash Glove & Sponge

De wash glove or for sponge is arguably the most important tool you use when washing your car. It largely determines whether you will make scratches during the wash or not. That's why a good wash mitt or sponge is so important for a detailer. Whether you're a DIY detailer or a professional, you always need a good wash mitt during the wash.
The wash mitt is what will come into contact with the paint and the dirt. It determines whether you can easily remove the dirt, whether you simply push the dirt over the paint and start making scratches and whether the dirt will be well absorbed into the wash glove so that you can safely remove it from the car without scratching. You have different options in terms of wash gloves and sponges that all have certain properties.
The most commonly used is a microfiber wash mitt or sponge. These consist of small fibers sometimes made from different materials that allow you to absorb dirt into the microfibres during the wash and remove them safely from the car without scratching. When you submerge the microfibres in a bucket of water and wring them out, you can remove most of the dirt from the microfibres, allowing you to wash again safely.
Some prefer a wash mitt or sponge made of wool. This works in much the same way as microfibre. Only wool is a bit coarser, so it will remove dirt faster, but these are also generally more expensive than microfibre and also less durable.
Finally, there is the regular foam sponge made of various types of foam. These can hold water well soap suds which can be easy to provide enough water and lubricant for the wash. Many people also just like using a simple sponge. However, it has the disadvantage that they are often much harder and coarser than a microfibre or wool sponge. This may already cause you to scratch. In addition, it can also absorb dirt worse. Often foam sponges simply push the dirt over the surface, leaving you scratching. When the dirt does get into the sponge, it generally just stays on the surface, so you keep rubbing the dirt over the paint and so make even more scratches. That's why you generally never see professional detailers use a real sponge.
As you can see, a microfibre sponge or wash mitt is somewhere in between. They are durable, soft, hold dirt without scratching and sometimes have a foam inner layer or are so thick that it can hold enough water and suds to allow your microfiber wash mitt to glide over the surface without scratching and while also quickly and safely removes the dirt.
